Four years since Da’aro Youth Project was established and we are looking for a person with strong leadership skills and high levels of relevant experience to bring our organisation to the next level. The Project Lead will manage all of the charity administration and provide leadership as part of the senior management team.

Da'aro Youth Project was established in 2018 by members of the Eritrean community in London. Eritreans, Ethiopians and Sudanese are some of the largest nationality groups of unaccompanied minors to arrive in the UK in recent years. Asylum-seeking children and young adults arrive here after traumatic journeys through the Sahara Desert, Libya, the Mediterranean Sea and after crossing borders in Europe, such as in Calais. Once here, young people often struggle to adapt to new lives separated from their families, and find that navigating the complex asylum and social care systems can be stressful and traumatic. We aim to promote the wellbeing of these migrant young people living in the UK, through direct support, through building bridges in the Eritrean community and through advocating for changes to unfair and discriminatory systems which undermine their wellbeing.

We want newly arrived asylum-seeking young people to feel at home and to know they have someone to turn to in a crisis. Towards this aim we run a weekly youth club – Injera Club – and provide advice, support and advocacy through our casework service for young people in need. We also undertake policy and campaigning work through the media and through other channels. We have also supported a number of bereaved families to access justice through the inquest process.

The Project Lead will:

  • Work with the Chair to ensure that the Trustee Board formulates and regularly reviews the charity’s vision, mission and strategic plans.

  • Manage finances and fundraising; communications; strategic planning; charity governance; monitoring and evaluation; report writing; human resources; and other day to day areas of work that may arise.

  • Represent Da’aro Youth Project locally and nationally and to promote the interests of its clients in collaboration with partners, staff, volunteers, supporters, and Trustees.

  • This position leads the Senior Management Team (equivalent of Director/CEO).

You'll need to have a track record of leading client-focused services; experience of project planning and delivery; and experience of finance management, fundraising, grant writing. An essential requirement is that the applicant has an understanding of and commitment to transformative justice, racial equity and migrant justice which underpin our work. We're keen to hear from applicants from all walks of life, and particularly welcome applicants with lived-experience of the asylum system.

Please note, that while we value diversity and welcome applications from those with lived-experience, this role does not require you to have lived-experience or be from a refugee community. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.

Closing date for Applications is 23.59 on Sunday 5th June 2022.

Interviews will take place during the week of 13th of June 2022.
