Landmark Legal Victory Protects Refugees from Homelessness
30 Mar 2026
Our casework and mentoring team empowers young people by helping them understand the UK system, including how to apply for housing and manage expectations. Furthermore, working in collaboration with partner organisations, we contributed to efforts encouraging the Home Office alongside other organisations and DPG law firm, to give greater consideration to young people seeking accommodation. This advocacy also led to a landmark case victory against the Home Office, strengthening protections for refugees at risk of homelessness.
Many newly recognised refugees were given just 28 days to leave asylum accommodation, often too little time to secure housing or financial support. The court found the Home Office acted unlawfully in limiting and failing to properly extend support. As a result, refugees must now be given longer support periods and clearer information about their rights, helping ensure a safer and more realistic transition into independent living.
