Our Work
At Daaro Youth, we offer several weekly youth clubs in south London for young individuals from the Horn of Africa, providing a vibrant and inclusive space.
Alongside the youth clubs, we provide casework support (advocacy) and mentoring (offering guidance and assistance with any challenges or need for advice). Additionally, we actively engage in campaigning and policy work to tackle the systemic barriers that unaccompanied young people encounter in the United Kingdom.
Through our efforts, we aim to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for these individuals and to move public policy in a helpful direction.
Mentoring
We recognise that our clients face great difficulty in finding out where and how they should apply for services and support (banking, education, housing, DVLA etc). Our mentoring department works with our youngsters, looking at their specific individual needs and matching them with volunteers who are also mostly from a diaspora background and who therefore understand the difficulties and challenges our clients face.
Casework Support
Our Casework Support Programme provides vital one-to-one support, advocacy, and referrals for young asylum-seekers and refugees from the Horn of Africa. Our team ensures comprehensive assistance, addressing diverse needs such as housing, general health, mental health support, education, immigration and family reunion.
Policy and Campaigning
Through our policy and campaigning programme we advocate for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people. We amplify their voices on mental health and systemic issues, educating the public about the challenges faced by refugees and asylum-seekers. Together with similar organisations we lobby policymakers in parliament and elsewhere with the aim of improving the conditions faced by those in the immigration system.
Bereavement Support
In the most tragic circumstances our clients and their families find it difficult to navigate the legal and other systems in the UK. Our Casework department provides this specialised legal and emotional support. We are familiar with how to work with various organisations who can provide additional support, for example if there is an inquest or media involvement
